Course unit content
Course Title: Philosophy of religion and atheism

As a sui generis philosophical discipline, the philosophy of religion can be synthetically defined as «thinking religion philosophically». Which place does the negation of religion, namely, atheism, occupy within the philosophy of religion? Even before and more generally, what is atheism? How can it exist? Why does it exist?
The course is divided into two modules. After a brief history of atheism, the first module will analyse some of the developments that the debate concerning the relation between religion and atheism has had in the history of the philosophy of religion from the XVIIth century to present. The second module will focus on some lesser-known figures that the prevailing atheism has had in France between the end of the XIXth and the beginning of the XXth century and on the critique made against them by some of the contemporary philosophies of religion.
