Integrated course unit module: ELEMENTS OF CLINICAL MEDICINE

Learning objectives

<br />The purpose of this Course is to provide basic elements about physiology and physiopathology of cardiovascular, renal, respiratory and endocrine systems, focusing on particular damage locations linked to environmental and physical risks.<br />Basic knowledge about first aid will be moreover considered together with clinical elements concerning main medical, traumatologic and toxicologic urgencies, with particular attention to workplace related pathologies.

Prerequisites

<br />To follow this Course the student should have knowledge about general and special anatomy and physiology are required. In particular about cardiovascular, respiratory, renal and endocrine physiology.

Course unit content

<br />Integrated Course of Medical Pathology program:<br />Cardiovascular system diseases: introduction to cardiovascular anatomy and physiology, cardiac function and circulatory control, cardiovascular risk factors and atherosclerosis, arterial hypertension, myocardial ischemia and congestive heart failure.<br />Respiratory system diseases: respiratory apparatus structure and function, respiratory insufficiency, asthma, COPD, interstitial lung pathology.<br />Kidney and uro-genital system diseases: kidneys structure and function, regulation of the hydro-electrolytic and acid-base balance, acute and chronic renal failure, tubule-interstitial and toxic nephropathies.<br />Endocrine system diseases: introduction to endocrinology, hormonal actions, hormonal structure, relationships between nervous and endocrine systems, hypothalamic and pituitary gland hormones and related pathologies, thyroid hormones and pathologies, pancreatic pathologies (particular attention to diabetes mellitus), cortical and medullar adrenal pathologies, testis and ovarian pathologies. Pathogenesis of endocrine alterations in answer to physical stimuli: ionizing and non-ionizing radiations effects, low and high temperatures and barotrauma effects, vibrations effects.<br />Urgency Medicine: urgency and emergency definitions, rescue planning with reference to the Italian law, first aid to the unconscious patient: syncope, coma, cardiac arrest ( bases of cardiopulmonary resuscitation), first aid to the respiratory insufficient patient, pectoral pain, palpitation, first aid to the cranial trauma, cervical trauma, thoracic and abdominal trauma, limbs traumas, poli-trauma, first aid to the burnt patient : burns physiopathology and classification, thermal and chemical burns, general notions of therapy, first aid to the struck patient: focal and systemic lesions, cardiovascular problems, rescue safety, first aid to the intoxicated patient: notions of general toxicology, toxic substances absorption ways, decontaminations, antidotes.<br />

<br />This Course schedules frontal lessons and practical classes at Dipartimento di Clinica Medica e Nefrologia e Scienze della Prevenzione and at Dipartimento di Medicina d'Urgenza of our University Hospital.
