Learning objectives
The course aims to ensure the student will have a thorough knowledge of the methods and scientific content of Health Physics, with particular attention to the physics of ionising radiation, and also acquire specific technical and professional knowledge.
Prerequisites
In order to be able to take the Health Physics and Radiation Safety internship exam, students must have passed all the first year exams and the Instrumentation and Data Acquisition exams.
Course unit content
<br />Ionising radiation: X rays and their production. Neutron , , beta, , gamma radiation (examples and use). Linear, circular, accelerators, reactors (use). Cosmic radiation (notes). Interaction of high energy photons with matter. Energy loss in matter. X rays: radiotherapy, radiodiagnostics, CAT, Radioactive isotopes: SPECT, PET radiodiagnostics. Interaction of heavy charged particles with matter. Bragg's peak, use in radiotherapy. Interaction of light charged particles (electrons) with matter, use in radiotherapy.
