PACKING PRINTING TECHNOLOGIES
Learning outcomes of the course unit
The teaching in this course of printing technologies for packaging aims to lead students to acquire this new industrial mentality. It will provide the student with the necessary information for being trained to be a Responsible Expert in being able to manage the agreement specifications between manufacturing activity and client-customer requirements, in being able to study and plan integrated process workflows, in establishing and observing reference standards and, especially, in becoming capable of evaluating products by objective methods (expert in instrumental checks), and even more expert in subjective evaluations (aesthetic and good taste, in accordance with the requirements required by the customer).
Willingness to study and to continually update knowledge. Good grounding in mathematics and physics, especially in colorimetry. General knowledge of marketing. General knowledge of process management. Good grounding in general chemistry, of inorganic and organic products, in particular those used packaging. Good knowledge of printing bases such as paper and cartons, plastic materials, glass, aluminium and tinplate. Good knowledge of synthetic resins, paints and dyes.

Lectures presented and commented on with the help of diagrams, pictures and graphs, organized in lecture notes, updated or amended for each course following teaching experience and experimental application experience (research in industrial applications); particular care taken in suggesting, for study and related in-depth studies, the bibliography relating to ISO standards and also the bibliography available on the Internet.
Practical exercises on print checking and evaluation systems, by means of both traditional and tristimulus densitometry (CIE XYZ); spectrophotometry and calculations regarding evaluation and for the creation of
ICC Colour Profiles and their analysis; Dot Reader or geometric detection of print graphisms for studying the transfer systems of printing elements.
Demonstrations for using computer applications of both prepress and control systems in guaranteeing the statistical qualitative performance required for the printed matter on packaging.
Days dedicated to practical demonstrations (at least two) for carrying out the entire cycle for the manufacture
of various containers, with design of most of the prepresses, carried out by each individual student,
imposition, preparation of printing formes (CTP), printing in four-colour machine, on production machines and hand packing of the packaging.
The achieved level of acquisition of the studied topic, specific to this course, is tested in three distinct stages.
The first by oral interrogation at the start of each lecture on the topics dealt with in the previous lecture, with request for the student's own opinion, not only on how he/she has perceived the topic, but especially what he/she thinks about it, followed by the suggestion to write down what has been discussed.
Towards the end of the course (about 3/4), each student will be invited to choose a specific topic in preparation
for the exam and to be presented complete at the exam, in the form of a short thesis, as demonstration of research and study, practical application proposal, with possible demonstrations drawn from demonstrations carried out on equipment.
Final personal interview in which the thesis topic can be discussed. Complementary questions on managerial, prepress, forming, plant and integrated process topics dealt with in the course.
Answer assessment, for each single topic required, using three criteria:
a) properly reasoned answer, rich with the student's own creative ideas (high score);
b) well-reasoned answer, with some difficulty as regards the student's own creative ideas (average score);
c) difficulty in suitably formulating answers, but shows practical sense, particularly with regard to managerial decisions (pass score).
The final overall assessment consists of the average of the individual answers, with slight adjustment up or down according to attendance at lectures, behaviour and diligence shown in perseverance with study, questions asking for further explanations, research, experiments and data processing especially of checks and evaluations.
