Learning outcomes of the course unit
Basic knowledge of techniques currently used for the genetic modification in superior animals in order to:
Improve physiological and anatomical features;
Production of proteins of pharmaceutical interest (animal pharming);
Development of animal systems for studying human pathologies;
Use of transgenic animal for xenotransplants;
Ethic, social, legal and environmental implications, related to the introduction of transgenic animals, will be evaluated;
Possible alternatives to the use of transgenic animals in applied and basic research will be also considered.
Basic knowledge of embryology (cellular and biochemical basis of fertilization, segmentation and differentiation) and molecular genetics.
Course contents summary
Explanation of modern techniques of mutagenesis, such as zygote microinjection, ES cells technology, cloning, aimed to modify the genome of both laboratory and bred animals.
