Learning objectives

We will tackle, on conservative basis, particular problems such as the <br />
outside preservation of sculptures , the restauration of sculptures, the <br />
restairation of flooring, the prospective replacement or integration of <br />
carved capitals.

Course unit content

 The course is divided into two definite sections: the former , historical - <br />
oriented considers the use of rocks for simple structures in the history of <br />
the great civilizations ( the Stone, Egyptian, Greek an Roman Age) <br />
emphasizing the most important working tecniques; the latter is aimed at <br />
the determination of marbles in the artistic works from the XI century up <br />
to now, with particular attention to Romanesque sculptures and to the <br />
reutilization of the marbles for the making of arches, columns, and <br />
capitals. This way students will get some pratice on the research on thin <br />
and polished sections and the isotopic data for the caracterization of the <br />
marbles themselves . <br />
