Learning objectives

Knowledge of the basic concepts related to geomechanic and hydrogeologic characteristics of soils and rocks: stresses acting in soils, seepage and consolidation, shearing strength and failure in soils; physical properties of rocks, stress on the rocks, friction, mechanism of fracture. Introduction to hydrogeological concept of groundwater flow and flow laws. Knowledge of the main  types of foundations and their reaction to applied strength; geotechnical site tests in soils and rocks related to buildings, highways, bridges, dams ecc.  Scarps and slope stability methods; safety factor of a slope. Short account to geologic risk mitigation (flood, landslide and seismic phenomena).
