Learning objectives

At the end of the course the Students will improve their skill of mapping in the field and they will be able to construct a geological map of the outcropping sedimentary units and to interpret the subsurface extension of the same units.

Prerequisites

Basic knowledges on stratigraphy, structural geology, tectonics and geography.

Course unit content

Aims and importance of field mapping.
Instruments for field mapping and their use.
Planning the field mapping.

Mapping geological contacts.

Interpreting the trace of geological contacts on topographic maps: a) given the strike and dip of the contact; b) given the intersection with the topography; c) given three points (three points method).
Exercises on interpretating the traces of geological contacts on topographic maps in the following cases: a) planar surface; b) folded surface; c) irregular surface.

Methods of measuring thickness of mapped geological units: a) measurements on the field; b) measurements on the map.
Calculating the depth of a geological contact.

Contour of geological contacts; contour and isobath maps: a) given strike and dip of the contact (strike line); b) given the trace of the contact on the topographic map; c) given subsurface data.
Contour of the volume of geological unit; isocore and isopach map construction from: a) field data; b) subsurafce data.

Mapping sedimentary successions in the field .
Teaching methods

The course is mainly helded in the field; lessons on each argument will be treated by means of exercises for both simple cases and cases encountered in the mapping area.

The exam will consist in a oral examination, solving exercises and presentation of the field mapping results including the integration with subsurface data.
