The course aims to introduce the fundamental principles of thermokinetics, lighting technique and acoustics.

thermokinetics: Conduction. Fourier's law. Energy balance equation. Fourier's equation. Stationary conduction. Variable conduction. Conduction with generation. Electrical analogy. Convection. Dimensional analysis. Thermal boundary layer. Forced, natural and mixed convection. Thermal radiation. General characteristics and definitions. Radiation laws. Form factor and its properties. Applications regarding mutual radiant exchange between black and grey surfaces. Simultaneous presence of different modes of exchange. Global heat exchange coefficient. Lighting technique: Rudiments of lighting technique. Photometric quantities. Calculation of artificial room lighting with the utilisation factor method. Natural lighting and daylight factor. Lighting technique measurements (luxmeter). Acoustics: Definition of specific quantities and units. The phenomenon of sound propagation. Elastic wave equation. Particle pressure and velocity. Wavelength, frequency, speed of sound. Acoustic impedance. Intensity and Density of Energy. Human perception of sound. Decibel scale, frequency weighting, isophonics. Phonometer and frequency analyser. Notes on the theory of signals and on the numerical processing of signals applied to sound analysis. Sound propagation: geometrical divergence, air, obstacle and ground attenuation. Screening, insulation of walls, surface absorption. Propagation in closed spaces, impulse response and sound decay. Reverberation time and the Sabine formula. Acoustic measurement in closed spaces. Numerical simulation models of the sound field. Auralization and acoustic virtual reality. Italian legislation on sound in the external environment, in the building industry and for protection of workers.
