Learning outcomes of the course unit
Students must acquire general concepts of hygiene and preventive medicine for prevention and promotion of health through the study of molecular epidemiology of transmittable diseases and chronic degenerative diseases.

Course contents summary
Hygiene: definition and purposes. Epidemiology: application of epidemiology. Epidemiological method. Sources of statistical-epidemiological data. Main measures in epidemiology: proportions and rates; incidence and prevalence; mortality and lethality. Epidemiological measures of risk: attributable risk, relative risk. Epidemiological studies: ecological, cross-sectional, case-control, cohort studies. Experimental studies. Efficacy assessment of medical interventions; ethical and privacy aspects. General epidemiology and prevention of infectious diseases. Infection sources; ways of income and elimination of pathogenic microorganisms; propagation modality; notification, isolation, diagnostic assessment, disinfection, asepsis, antisepsis. Epidemiology and prevention of chronic-degenerative pathologies. Means and strategies of prevention. Tertiary, secondary, primary prevention. Active immune prophylaxis: composition of the vaccine; the main vaccines; production of new vaccines; the vaccination strategies. Passive immune prophylaxis; chemio-prophylaxis. Food education; hygiene of foods, feed infection and toxinfection. Elements of organization and sanitary legislation.
