PHARMACEUTICAL CHEMISTRY II
Learning outcomes of the course unit
The course of Medicinal Chemistry II provides chemical information about the Pharmaceutical classes include in the program, with special regard to the relationships between chemical structure and pharmaceutical, pharmacodynamic and pharmacokinetic properties. The course emphasizes the study of the chemical and phisycochemical properties of the drugs, the mechanism of action, the most important biotransformations and metabolic considerations, the classification and the nomenclature of the drugs.
The course of Medicinal Chemistry II needs adequate knowledge of Organic Chemistry, Biochemistry and Physiology. The admission to the examination requires the accomplishment of these exames and that of Medicinal Chemistry I.
Course contents summary
The course is intended to provide students with the conceptual bases and operational frameworks for discussing the design and the molecular basis for activity of drugs acting at the central as well as peripheral nervous system. In particular, the following topics will be covered:

NEUROTRASMISSION AND DRUGS ACTING ON THE CENTRAL NERVOUS SYSTEM (CNS)
INHIBITORY NEUROTRANSMITTERS: GABA and glycine.
HYPNOTICS AND SEDATIVES.
ANTISEIZURE (ANTIEPILEPTIC) DRUGS
DRUGS EMPLOYED IN THE TREATMENT FOR ANXIETY DISORDERS: .
DOPAMINE RECEPTORS AND PARKINSONISM.
DRUGS USED IN THE TREATMENT OF PSYCOSIS TRICYCLIC ANTIPSYCOTIC AGENTS (NEUROLEPTICS) TREATMENT OF MANIA: LITHIUM ION

The course is based upon 72 hours of frontal didactics. The examination consists in an oral test to assay the level of comprehension and the preparation of the student in the pharmacochemistry, in the ADME and in the mechanism of action.
