MEDICINAL CHEMISTRY II
Learning outcomes of the course unit
The aim of the course is to study the structure of medicines and their therapeutic uses. The course describes a panorama of medicines useful for combating pain, disorders and diseases of the CNS and the symptoms of inflammation and allergies. Additionally, students will acquire knowledge on the side, mechanism of the action, structure-activity relationship, pharmacokinetic characteristics, undesired effects and toxicity of the medicines.
Compulsory previous courses: the exam must have been preceded by examinations in Pharmacology and Medicinal Chemistry I.
Course contents summary
Neurotranmettiters of the central nervous system. Receptors involved in transmitting impulses.
Drugs that act on the central nervous system
- General anesthetics.
- Hypnotics and sedatives.
- Opioid analgesics.
- Antiparkinson drugs.
- Respiratory stimulants.

The final (oral) exam will test all the topics covered in the syllabus. The student will be expected to understand and be able to use the fundamental concepts relative to each topic.
