Learning outcomes of the course unit
The student must apprehend the general principles regulating the biochemical functioning of an euchariotic cell. Moreover, he must know the energetic metabolism and, in particular , the glycolitic pathway. In addition, he must know the contents of proteomics and genomics.
The student must pass the 1st year - 1st semester exams of Chemistry before being admitted to Systematic Biochemistry exam
Course contents summary
ATP and the meaning of the free energy in Biochemistry. Structure and function of aminoacids and of azotate bases of DNA and RNA. DNA replication, translation and protein synthesis. Structure and function of enzymes and coenzymes (the mechanism of enzymes and the role of NAD+ and FADH in electrons transportation). Hemoglobin and myoglobin and oxygen transportation; membrane pumps and shuttle systems in mitochondria. Structure and function of lipids and sugars (most common animal and vegetable poly- di- and mono-saccharides). Metabolism of sugars and lipids with ATP production. Scheletal muscle as an example of apparatus. Outlines on immune system and the the structure and role of immunoglobulins.
