Learning objectives

<br />Students are expected to acquire concepts regarding the nutritional value and chemical and biological characteristics of feeds. Learn the scientific bases of the rationing process. Know feeding techniques and know how to manage horse feeding on the basis of the requirements of the various phases of the production cycle.

Prerequisites

Know animal physiology with special reference to the physiology of the digestive tract, reproduction, lactation and muscular activity 

Course unit content

<br />Nutritional substances: <br />- Proteins, carbohydrates and lipids: classification, general properties and nutritional roles; <br />- Vitamins and minerals: role, requirement, deficiency and interaction with various components of diet;<br />- Water: functions and quantitative/qualitative aspects;<br />Metabolic use of organic and inorganic matter. <br />Voluntary consumption of dry matter: assessment and sources of variation.<br />Factors affecting digestibility feeds: physical shape, palatability, preservability and dietetic action  <br />Nutritive value and energy utilisation of feeds <br />Chemical-nutritional evaluation of foods: fodder; energy sources, protein sources.<br />Nutritional requirements: Variation factors.<br />Scientific bases and techniques for ration optimisation <br />
