Learning outcomes of the course unit
The major goal is to provide a basic survey of the principles of electrostatics, electromagnetism and optics.
Course contents summary
Electrostatics Electric charge, charge conservation and quantization, units, electric force and Coulomb's law, electric field and field lines, superposition principle, examples of electric field calculation starting from different charge distributions. Conductors and insulators. Electric dipoles. Motion of a charged particle in a applied electric field.
Gauss's law Electric flux and Gauss's theorem. Examples. Conductors in electrostatic equilibrium.
Electric Potential Conservative field, electric energy, electrostatic potential, equipotential surfaces, examples.
Capacitance and capacitors capacitance of a parallel-plate, spherical, cilindrical capacitor. Capacitors in series and in parallel. Energy stored in a capacitor. Polarization in dielectrics.
Resistance and Ohm's laws The electromotive force. Electric currents, resistance, Ohm's laws, resistances in series and in parallel. Joule's effect.
Magnetic Field The magnetic field and its sources. Lorentz's force. Motion of a charged particle in a applied magnetic field. Forces on current-carrying conductors. The magnetic dipole. Biot-Savart's law. Ampère's theorem and applications.
Faraday-Neumann's law Statement of Faraday-Neumann-Lenz's law and consequences. Electromagnetic induction. Self- and mutual inductance. Circuits RC, RL and LC.
Electromagnetic waves Displacement current, generalization of Ampère's theorem. Maxwell's equations. Electromagnetic waves and electromagnetic spectrum. Energy of an electromagnetic wave.
Optics What is Light? Light propagation in vacuum and in media. Reflection and refraction laws. Interference and diffraction.
