Integrated course unit module: Infectious diseases II and avian pathology

Learning objectives

The goal of the course is to provide students with: <br />
• knowledge of the etiopathogenesis, symptomatology and lesions of the main viral diseases of domestic animals; <br />
• the ability to identify the correct diagnostic pathway and interpret the data obtained through laboratory diagnosis; <br />
• the ability to draw up direct and indirect control measures, with particular reference to vaccine prophylaxis; <br />
• skills for critically assessing the national and international legislation that shapes management of viral diseases. <br />

Microbiology and immunology - Veterinary epidemiology

Course unit content

Introduction to the study of viral diseases in domestic animals: basic concepts relating to the nature and classification of viruses, their pathogenic potential and the main investigation methods used in virology are presented. <br />
Special part: study of the main virus-related diseases in domestic animals (swine fevers, poxvirus diseases, herpesvirus diseases, adenovirus diseases, coronavirus diseases, orbivirus infections in sheep and horses, picornavirus infections, rhabdovirus infections, togavirus infections, the significance of so-called “non-conventional agents” or prions in domestic animal diseases). Introduction to the study of poultry diseases: the course will cover concepts relating to the semiological pattern for diagnosing avian diseases, autopsy techniques and main laboratory tests in diagnosing diseases in poultry. Special part: bacterial diseases (salmonellosis, pullorosis-typhoid, colibacillosis, mycoplasmosis, pasteurellosis/moraxella infections, tuberculosis, staphylococcosis, chlamydiosis, swine erysipelas, clostridium infections, infectious coryza), viral diseases (avian influenza, Newcastle disease, infectious laryngotracheitis, infectious bronchitis, diphtheria/cowpox, Gumboro disease, Marek’s disease, leukosis-sarcoma complex, encephalomyelitis, arthritis/tenosynovitis, adenovirus infections, infectious chicken anemia), Parasitic and mycotic diseases, diseases of unknown etiology. <br />
