Learning objectives

<br />The first objective of the course in Veterinary Radiology is to give students the basic knowledge on x-ray radiation and in particular how they are produced for diagnostic pourpose. The components and the functioning of the x-ray machine and all the steps needed to obtain a radiographic image, and how it occurs are discussed.<br />The second objective is to make the students able to approach the  radiographic image and understand contrast and the grey scale of the image. Students have to learn and practice on radiographic interpretation of films, giving a clinical interpretation of the radiological signs.<br />The third objective is to give students a basic knowledge on early and late biological effects of x radiations. Students should be aware of the significance of 'radioprotection', and of the precautionary measures that have to be always considered.

Prerequisites

<br />Propedaeutic to Patologia Generale, Fisiopatologia Animale, Immunopatologia Veterinaria.

Course unit content

<br />Radiation Physic. X-ray tube and X-ray machine. Scatter radiation and how to prevent/reduce them. Radiographic film and cassette. Intensifying screens. Artifacts and technical mistakes. Identification of the radiograph. Manual and automatic film processing. Exposure factors (kV, mAs). Radiations¿ biological effects. Radiation protection. Radiographic examination of small and large animals.<br /> <br />
