Learning outcomes of the course unit
To furnish practical elements of diagnostic clinic of field to the student in the equine and bovine kind to the goals of the control and evaluation of the reproductive potential of the kinds in examination, to acquire good gynecological experience and to develop critical sense towards the reproductive and newborn problem list.
Course contents summary
Students will perform manual trans-rectal gynaecological inspections of mares and cows; they will perform gynaecological examinations utilising ultrasonography to obtain diagnostic images; they will perform manual vaginal exploration and visual examination of the vagina and cervix by means of the speculum. Modern techniques of monitoring the foetus and the satisfactory health of the pregnancy in bovine and equine species will be described and applied. During the equine breeding season, students will be able to work with the stallions operating at the breeding station, participating in the thrice-weekly collection of seminal fluid, evaluating it and processing it for use in its fresh state or for despatch in a refrigerated state to other breeding stations for use at a later date.
