Learning outcomes of the course unit
Conoscenze e capacità di comprensione:
Alla fine del percorso dell’insegnamento lo studente dovrà conoscere i fenomeni fondamentali dell'elettromagnetismo classico e le leggi che li governano. Dovrà, inoltre, essere in grado di risolvere problemi relativi agli argomenti trattati in teoria.
Conoscenza e capacità di comprensione applicate:
Lo studente dovrà essere in grado di analizzare i fenomeni elettromagnetici e di interpretarli sulla base di una formulazione matematica delle leggi fisiche.
Autonomia di giudizio:
Alla fine del corso, lo studente dovrà possedere gli strumenti per comprendere i fenomeni fisici di natura elettromagnetica.
Capacità comunicative:
Lo studente dovrà possedere l’abilità di esporre in maniera chiara i concetti di base dell'elettromagnetismo e le loro conseguenze sui fenomeni osservabili.
Capacità di apprendere:
Lo studente dovrà aver acquisito quelle capacità di apprendimento dell'elettromagnetismo che gli sono necessarie per intraprendere studi successivi con un alto grado di autonomia.
Knowledge and understanding:
At the end of this course the student should know the basic phenomena of the classical electromagnetism and the underlying physical laws. Moreover, he should be able to resolve problems on the subjects treated
in the theory lectures.
Applying knowledge and understanding:
The student should be able to analyze the electromagnetic phenomena and to interpret them on the basis of the mathematical formulation of the physical laws.
Making judgments:
By the end of the course, the student should be able to understand the physical phenomena of the electromagnetism.
Communication skills:
The student should be able to clearly present the basic concepts of electromagnetism and their consequences on observable phenomena.
Learning skills:
The student should have acquired the learning skills related to electromagnetism, which are necessary to undertake successive studies with a high degree of autonomy.
Prerequisites
It is important to have an appropriate knowledge of classical mechanics and ondulatory phenomena as treated in the course of General Physics 1.

The course is structured in two parts: theory and problems. The theory lectures cover the following subjects:
- Coulomb's law and electric field
- Gauss's law
- Electric Potential
- Conductors
- Capacitance
- Dielectrics
- Current and resistance
- DC circuits
- Magnetostatics
- Diamagnetism, paramagnetism and ferromagnetism
- Electromagnetic induction
- RL and LC circuits
- Maxwell equations
- Electromagnetic waves
The problems are focused on the subjects treated in the theory part.

Teaching methods
Lectures will be held in presence (upopn booking) and they will also be available online in synchronous mode via Microsoft Teams. Recorded lectures will also be available on Elly for the next 3 days.
Slides will be used to convey the most important messages of the theory lectures.
The problems will be resolved at the blackboard.

Assessment methods and criteria
The examination is based written tests., with exercises and theory questions. If the average mark is at least 21/30, the examination is passed and an oral test is not needed, but can always be requested to possibly improve the mark. If the mark is between 13 and 20/30, an oral test is needed to pass the examination.
If, due to the persistence of the health emergency, it will be necessary to perform the exams in remote, the written tests will be performed remotely or replaced by remote oral tests via Teams.
The students who constantly attend the lessons and get a pass on the infra annum tests, can take a simplified final exam. The others will have to take a complete one which consists of a written and, if required, an oral test.
