Learning objectives

(Knowledge and understanding)
The course will introduce students to a critical understanding of the above mentioned issues. This knowledge will be achieved and supported with lectures, seminars, conferences, study visits, and will be screened with oral examinations.
(Applying knowledge and understanding)
The study of the methodologies and the techniques related to the above cited issues will produce an understanding of the history of the book and the history of the text. This knowledge will offer the skills appropriate to analyze the development of the European literary culture.
(Making judgements)
At the end of the course the students should have acquired the ability to understand the above mentioned issues as well as to learn the essential knowledge related to them.
(Communication skills)
At the end of the course, students should have achieved the ability to communicate clearly and to use the appropriate technical vocabulary related to the issues of the course.
(Learning skills)
The commitment on the theoretical and disciplinary aspects of the course should give students the appropriate methodology and learning skills useful for access to future professions related to the cultural heritage.

Course unit content

The introduction of the course will concern the key moments of the European literary history from the Middle Ages to the Renaissance with reference to the history of the book.
Then, a relevant part of it will be dedicated to the dissemination and reception of the written and oral texts in the aforementioned epochs and also in the eighteenth century, especially regarding the Italian-Spanish relations and the figure and activity of the famous printer Giambattista Bodoni.
The course aims to provide students with adequate knowledge about the following issues:
• Medieval, humanistic and Renaissance literature.
• Printed popular literature (XV-XIX centuries).
• History of the books and reading.
• Italian typography and book (18th century).

Teaching methods

Lectures, multimedia, group discussions.

Assessment methods and criteria

Oral examination about the topics covered in the lectures and the texts listed in the bibliography.
A pass (18-23/30) is determined by the student’s possession of the minimum, fundamental contents of the course, an adequate level of autonomous preparation and ability to solve problems related to information retrieval and the decoding of complex texts, as well as an acceptable level of ability in making independent judgments. Middle-range scores (24-27/30) are assigned to the student who produces evidence of a more than sufficient level (24-25/30) or good level (26-27/30) in the evaluation indicators listed above. Higher scores (from 28/30 to 30/30 cum laude) are awarded on the basis of the student’s demonstration of a very good or excellent level in the evaluation indicators listed above.
