## Learning outcomes of the course unit

Knowledge and understanding:

At the end of this course the student should know the basic phenomena of the classical electromagnetism and the underlying physical laws. Moreover, he should be able to resolve problems on the subjects treated in the theory lectures.

Applying knowledge and understanding:

The student should be able to analyze the electromagnetic phenomena and to interpret them on the basis of the mathematical formulation of the physical laws.

Making judgments:

By the end of the course, the student should be able to understand the physical phenomena of the electromagnetism.

Communication skills:

The student should be able to clearly present the basic concepts of electromagnetism and their consequences on observable phenomena.

## Course contents summary

The course is structured in two parts: theory and problems. The theory lectures cover the following subjects:

-Coulomb's law and electric field -Gauss's law -Electric Potential-Conductors-Capacitance-Dielectrics -Current and resistance-DC circuits

-Magnetostatics-Diamagnetism, paramagnetism and ferromagnetism

-Electromagnetic induction

-RL and LC circuits

-Maxwell equations -Electromagnetic waves

The problems are focused on the subjects treated in the theory part.

## Teaching methods

Slides will be used to convey the most important messages of the theory lectures. The problems will be resolved at the blackboard, possibly with the participation of the students.

## Assessment methods and criteria

The examination is based on two partial written tests during the semester, or, alternatively, on a single final written test. If the average mark is at least 21/30, the examination is passed and an oral test is not needed, but can always be requested to possibly improve the mark. If the mark is between 13 and 20/30, an oral test is needed to pass the examination.

Written tests aim to verify the student’s knowledge and his ability to apply the concepts to physical problems. These tests (duration 2 hours) usually contain two problems and few questions on the theoretical concepts. During written tests students can use a calculator. The oral test (duration 45 minutes) focuses on the knowledge and understanding of the topics discussed during the lectures.

The evaluation of each test is on a scale of 30 (cum laude for a perfect test). The final evaluation for the two partial written tests results from the average of the two separate evaluations. In case of oral test, the final mark results from the overall evaluation of the written and oral parts, normally with equal weights.

The mark of a written test is normally published within a week on ESSE3. In case of oral test, the overall evaluation is communicated to the student immediately after the test.

The online registration is compulsory both for oral and written tests.
