Learning objectives

GL_LM: The student of Greek Literature will refine her/his knowledge of historical grammar,metre and style, to improve the historical knowledge of the Greek literature, the skills required for interpreting the critical editions of the Greek texts, and finally to improve the knowledge and the use of the bibliographical and linguistic reference tools.
SAWCS_LM: Acquire the methodological, literary and linguistic skills required for independent research work aided by the resources available for the study of classical languages and literature.

Prerequisites

GL_LM: Prerequisites will be evaluated by the teacher in a preliminary interview with reference to the learning target of the student. However, it is a good basis to have acquired 12 CFUs of Greek Literature (LT).
SAWCS_LM: Have earned at least 10 credits in the scientific-disciplinary area of Latin (Latin language and literature, L-FIL-LET/04).
- Students must pass a preliminary written entry exam, if they have already gained 18 credits in the same SDA (Latin language and literature, L-FIL-LET/04).

Course unit content

GL_LM: Aristophanes' Birds: text, interpretation and reception.
SAWCS_LM: Classical texts and informatics: stylistic and intertextual analysis of poems. The study of classical texts must be aided by text and bibliographical databases. Students must be able to use these research tools, with a full awareness of the potential of such tools as well as of the risks deriving from their exclusive and uncritical use.
Study and discussion of assigned individual research topics.

GL_LM: Reference editions will be recommended at the beginning of the course in the extended version of the program (see also the ELLY platform).

Teaching methods

GL_LM: Lectures on the above mentioned texts. At the end of the course, a seminar will involve the students with the aim of preparing a research paper about a selected topic chosen in accordance between the teacher and the students.
SAWCS_LM: The course consists of classroom lectures and exercises, followed by a weekly tutorial. The exam consists of an oral and practical exam covering syllabus topics and presentation of an individual research project agreed upon with the course professor.

Assessment methods and criteria

GL_LM: Students will have an oral examination based on primary and seconday literature (see above). The examination aims to test: 1) good reading and translation skills of Greek texts; 2) ability in order to produce personal interpretation of the texts; 3) oral proficiency; correct use of language; ability to give proper answers to the questions. Students who will meet the first 2 assessment criteria and will be able to reach a minimum of 60 percent score will get a pass grade. The oral examination involves the discussion of a paper.
SAWCS_LM: Oral exam and practical test. The final evaluation is determined by the average of the votes reported.
