HISTORY OF MODERN EUROPE
Learning outcomes of the course unit
Knowledge and understanding. The teaching of the History of contemporary Europe allows students a thoroughly critical understanding of the past seventy years, providing instruments for a critical interpretation of the present.
Ability to apply knowledge and understanding. The study of the recent historical period will give students the ability to connect the past with the present, identifying trends and long-term problems.
Making judgments. At the end of the course students should have acquired the ability to collect data, to critically interpret the historical evolution and to formulate independent and self-motivated judgments on the socio-political context in which they occur.
Communication skills. At the end of the course students should have achieved the ability to clearly communicate the main problems of European history.
Learning skills. A diligent study should provide students with a certain methodological mastery, learning and analytical skills, also for aspects not covered in this course, that will be useful for access to future professions related to communication and journalism.
Course contents summary
Europe from the Second World War to the 21st Century.
After presenting the key dates of European history from 1945 to the present time, the course deals most of all with some aspects of particular interest: the process of European unification, the history of the main western countries, the history of Eastern Europe, from the beginning of the communist regimes to their end.
Italian history from 1945 will be the object of a seminar led by Elisabetta Salvini.

Participation in the conference The violated landscape: the two world wars, the people, the nature" and the presentation during the examination of a report on what was heard will exempt from the study of chapters 5 and 6 of the volume History of Republican Italy.

Participation in the conference "The violated landscape: the two world wars, the people, the nature" and the presentation during the examination of a report on what was heard will exempt from the study of pages 179-301 of the volume L’Europa e le sue memorie.
IMPORTANT NOTE. The exam program is the same for all students. There is no difference between those who attend the classes and those who cannot attend.
Teaching method. The teaching consists of lectures with computer science aid. Each lesson is presented with PowerPoint slides. Everyone is advised to download files projected in class from the Elly platform.
During the course, prof. Guillermo Marin, from the University of the Basque Country, will give two lessons on the history of contemporary Spain.
On November 21st and 22nd the lessons will be replaced by participation in the conference “Il paesaggio violentato. The two world wars, the people, the nature”, to be held in Parma, organized by the Alcide Cervi Institute in agreement with the University (Detailed news will follow).
Assessment methods and criteria
Learning check method: oral only. Both general and specific questions will be asked in order to meet the set formative objectives.
A fail is determined by the lack of an understanding of the minimum content of the course, the inability to express oneself adequately, by a lack of autonomous preparation, as well as an inability to make independent judgments.
A pass (18-23/30) is determined by the student’s possession of the minimum, fundamental contents of the course and an adequate level of autonomous preparation.
Middle-range scores (24-27/30) are assigned to the student who produces evidence of a more than sufficient level (24-25/30) or good level (26-27/30) in the evaluation indicators listed above.
Higher scores (from 28/30 to 30/30 cum laude) are awarded on the basis of the student’s demonstration of a very good or excellent level in the evaluation indicators listed above.
