HAEMATOLOGY IN SPORTS
Learning outcomes of the course unit
The learning objectives of the course will be the acquisition of basic knowledge on blood cells, physiological and pathophysiological mechanisms that regulate their formation in the bone marrow and on major diseases of the blood and blood-forming organs. Students will need to show ability to understand what is the physiology and pathophysiology of blood cells and hematopoiesis and must show competence of the concepts that the student will acquire through the frequency of education and study.
The course will also aim to achieve autonomy judgment, communication skills and learning ability in the context of hematology applied to the field of sports.
Course contents summary
The first lessons cover general topics such as peripheral blood cells, their morphology with a brief outline of the physiology of blood cells. They will also describe the main mechanisms of hematopoiesis including erythropoiesis, the myelopoiesis and lymphopoiesis and the role of growth factors such as erythropoietin, thrombopoietin and colony stimulating factors.
The second part of the course is devoted to the handling of certain blood disorders such as anemia, polycythemia and erythrocytosis, thrombocytosis, and thrombocytopenia and the major cancers of the hematopoietic system (leukemia, lymphoma and multiple myeloma). Aspects will be addressed etiological, pathophysiological and diagnostic of these pathologies
The third part of the course is the stem cell transplantation and the quality of life of haematological patients, the role of the 'sport of patients with hematologic malignancies undergoing such procedures.

The modalities of teaching and teaching methods of the course will be lectures, participation in seminars and conferences and practical exercises in the laboratory of hematology as well as also bibliographical research. During the lessons, we will discuss the issues related to hematology in sports. The course will be supported by laboratory exercises. The exercises will be individual and practices and their purpose is to provide the opportunity for each student to be able to measure in the design of autonomous solution to the real problems that will be made. These activities will be planned in such a way that within each exercise, the student can achieve practically the solutions of the problems outlined during theoretical lessons.
Assessment methods and criteria
The test mode will be to make interactive lessons with questions aimed at students and their active involvement in the discussion on the main issues discussed during the lectures. The knowledge and the links between knowledge and skills that are going to occur will focus on the characteristics of blood cells, hematopoiesis and pathophysiology, etiology and diagnosis of major diseases of the blood and blood-forming organs.
A final check will be made through written test with open questions on the main topics discussed during the lectures.
