Learning outcomes of the course unit
Knowledge and understanding
Students will develop knowledge and comprehension competence in the field of Latin philology and textual criticism thanks to the use of different sources (manuals, books and scientific articles, lectures, etc.) and by reading Latin authors in their original language and in critical editions, providing at the same time a linguistic and stylistic commentary of the text.
Applying knowledge and understanding
Students will be able to apply knowledge and comprehension skills useful for a first autonomous analysis of Latin texts, with good competence in translation, acquiring method and critical attitude useful for an initial training of a teacher, as well as for other professional profiles related to humanities and human resources.
Students will be able to collect and interpret data to determine autonomous judgements in the field of classical literature and history, including cross-cultural and interdisciplinary thinking on cultural and intercultural topics connected to the judgements expressed.
Thanks to the specific focus on communication competences, students will be able to convey information, ideas, problems and solutions to specialists and non-specialists.
Thanks to the general scaffolding of the course which puts processes related to acquiring a critical attitude at the centre, students will develop learning skills useful to to undertake further studies in classic subjects and also to begin with critical attitude a working activity
12 CFU in the subject area of Latin Language and Litterature are required. Pass a second preliminary written exam ("prova scritta latino 2"), if students have already gained 18 credits in the same SDA (latin language and literature, L-FIL-LET/04).
Course contents summary
The course consists of two parts. The so called institutional part deals with a short history of Latin philology and the principles of textual criticism.
Monographic section: Women in Horace’s odes.
In his erotic poems Horace addresses many women, not a single one, as it is the case of Catullus with Lesbia or of the elegists with their dominae. These women are sometimes sharply, sometimes light portrayed and while we meet some of them many times, others appears only once. The course focuses on the most significant characters, in deep connection with the themes and the structures of the poems.

frontal lessons and classes
Assessment methods and criteria
The exam consists of an oral interview covering syllabus topics and criteria . The evaluation is on 30-point scale. Students will show their basic competence in translating the authors proposed during frontal lessons and in reading critical text and critical apparatus of these authors; in giving a basic account of the history of Latin philology. . Students will be assessed on: written and oral proficiency; language property; working out contents; ability to make inter-disciplinary connections; proper use of specialist language; ability to give proper answers to given questions. Students will have to score a minimum of 60 percent or better of the given questions to get a pass grade.
