Learning objectives

The course allows the student to :
• acquire a diachronic knowledge providing the student
with a greater understanding, awareness and judgment
about the Germanic languages;
• collect data, information, knowledge, sources in order to acquire a
historical interpretation and a linguistic judgement as much indipendent as possible;
• acquire a comparative linguistic framework necessary for a correct
contextualization of the Germanic language studied by the student;
• know and understand the milestones leading to the
formation of modern Germanic languages;
• understand and interpret text written im old Germanic languages, applying their basic knowledge in order to communicate and argue on topics presented in the course.

Prerequisites

Knowledge of at least one germanic Language.

Course unit content

Preliminary study of the Germanic comparative philology, with the aim of making students acquainted with the fundamentals of the Germanic languages and cultures in their relations with the indo European Linguistic group, as well with other Cultures of Europe.

Teaching methods

Frontal lessons.

Assessment methods and criteria

The exam will consist of two parts, namely:
1.Some questions with the aim to check the student’s knowledge of the subject, from the fundamentals , such as history and culture of the Germanic peoples both in their relations with other cultures and with the Roman Civilisation, especially as for Goths and Lombard , then some more specific questions about verbal ablaut (or reduplication) and the most important features of the different groups of the Germanic languages.
2. One question (in Italian) about one of the text-books.
As for the valuation,
1)deep lack in the knowledge of the subject can imply fail
2.if the students shows some knowledge of the fundamentals and he/she has an average command of the language, he/she can get marks from 18 to 23/30.
3. A n intermediate valuation between 24 and 27/30 can be obtained by the students if he/she shows to have a good command of the language and a good knowledge of the subject.
4. The students can get the highest marks, between 28 and 30/30 or 30 and lode, if he/she shows to have a perfect command of both the subject and the language.

Other information

It's possible to expand the lesosns in other parts of Indo-European territory.
Questions can be asked in the coyrse of the lectures. These questions must be intended of course onlz as an exhortation to Learning.
