Learning outcomes of the course unit
The aim of the course is to provide basic concepts about the epidemiological studies and the role of epidemiology for quantifying and interpreting health phenomena. To provide knowledge for reading and understanding scientific papers.
The students will acquire autonomy of judgement and specific communication skills.
No prerequisites required.

Basic concepts of epidemiology as fundamental tools for identifying public health problems, planning and evaluating public health interventions.
Definition, scope and uses of epidemiology
The role of epidemiology in planning and evaluating public health interventions.
The sources of the statistical-epidemiological data.
Descriptive epidemiological measures.
Epidemiological measures of risk.
Ecological studies, cross-sectional studies, case-control studies, cohort studies, experimental studies.
Epidemiological study design.

The management of an epidemic.
