By the end of the course the student is expected: 1) to have acquired a deeper knowledge and understanding of the biostratigraphy and its role in obtaining a chronostratigraphic and biochronologic framework of sedimentary successions and in the Geological Time Scale; 2) to be able to understand, evaluate and carry out biostratigraphic interpretations integrated with other stratigraphic tools; 3) to have acquired a better knowledge of applications of biostratigraphy in the fields of Geological Sciences; 4) to be able to recognize the main foraminiferal biostratigraphic markers of the Neogene.

Assessment methods and criteria
Examination will consist of:
- test at microscope in order to recognize the main foraminiferal biostratigraphic markers of Neogene. The evaluation scale will be 0 -30.
- oral text consisting of 3 questions to verify the knowledge and understanding, the capability of applying knowledge and understanding and making judgements regarding the topics treated during the course and the communication skills. The evaluation scale will be 0-30.
The final mark will be the arithmetic mean of the marks of the two tests
