PHILOSOPHY OF LANGUAGE
Learning outcomes of the course unit
The course aims at providing the student with an adequate ability in analyzing the problems at stake and in elaborating arguments with regard to these, and at improving his or her autonomy in judgment and his or her skills in oral (thanks to the discussion in class) and written (thanks to the
redaction of a paper) communication and in learning in this field.
Course contents summary
After a short introduction to some basic semantic notions, the course will focus on the functioning of the so-called "general terms", expressions such as "cat", "chair", and "beer".
They will be communicated in class.
Lectures, with discussion in class.
Assessment methods and criteria
Discussion of a written paper, aimed at ascertaining the acquisition of the
ability in analyzing the problems at stake and elaborating arguments with
regard to these.
