Learning outcomes of the course unit
The course aims to provide the student with the first tools to start reading a local reality and understand its needs.
Descriptor 1 - knowledge and understanding
The course aims to provide the main references of the territorial analysis contextualizing the educational phenomenon in the European geopolitical context. Students will understand what are the constitutive characteristics of contemporary society and what have been, even from a historical point of view, the changes that have defined the current geopolitical structure. They will be able to analyze the transformations of the educational system in the broader framework of the overall socio-cultural change. They will then be able to identify the salient elements and lines of development of European policies and their impact on educational services.
Descriptor 2 - Ability to apply knowledge and understanding
The student will develop the ability to critically examine articles and texts with the aim of developing a reading key that allows them to critically read the reality. Current articles related to the European context will be read in class and analyzed together with the students. On a more strictly professional level, students will be able to read the calls of the European Social Fund by linking them to the territorial economic peculiarities and local systems of work. Some calls will be critically read in class and work will be done to understand their relations with European context strategies.
Descriptor 3 - Autonomy of judgment
The teaching aims to develop autonomy of judgment and ability to analyze the territorial problems at different scales, from the local to the European scale. We will analyze individual policies to see the different declinations from local to European level.
Descriptor 4 - Communication skills
Students must be able to communicate both verbally and in writing, with sufficient command of language, the contents of educational projects built on the basis of the European tenders that will be examined.
Descriptor 5 - Ability to learn
Students must be able to provide autonomously to their updating by identifying the most appropriate information sources and paying attention to their reliability. For this they will be called during the course in search of documentation and to read them independently.
Course contents summary
The course aims to introduce the student to the fundamental concepts of economic geography with a European perspective. The first part of the course will cover topics of a general nature aimed at framing the discipline and its methodologies. We will explore topics such as the economic region, the concept of distance, trans -arity, the center-periphery paradigm, territorial organization, etc.
The second part of the course is, instead, addressed to the analysis of the European geopolitical situation. After a brief introduction to the history of the European Union, some topics related to European strategies and policies will be explored. In particular, we will focus on the architecture of European governance, on the main policies and on the Lisbon Strategy, nowadays Europe 2020. The role of European strategies in the transformation of educational systems will be studied in detail. The study of the proposed themes will be carried out using the methodologies and concepts learned in the first part of the course

The course will be developed in a series of lectures in which the various topics will be discussed. Each lesson will propose theoretical moments flanked by concrete examples. During the course to support the lessons will be made available to students of the materials on the Elly platform. From the middle of the course onwards students will be asked to read a few newspapers online every day to work on the most topical European issues. Together with the teacher, some European tenders for the allocation of structural funds in the educational field will be examined and analyzed in relation to the main European strategies.
Assessment methods and criteria
The assessment of learning will take place through a written exam to open questions, but with a defined space to respond. The duration will be 1 hour. The proposed questions will be three with different degrees of difficulty that will allow to evaluate the accuracy of the study, the ability to link general concepts and specific topics and, finally, the level of autonomy of judgment.
The compitosi will consider exceeded if the student will answer in sufficient way to all three questions posed. The overall evaluation will derive from the average of the votes of the individual questions.
The results of the exam are published on the esse3 portal and the timing will depend on the number of participants. You will go from a minimum of one week up to 3 weeks for appeals with more than 200 members. Students can view the tasks by appointment with the teacher.
The teaching materials on Elly are not part of the exam program, but support the lectures.
