Learning objectives

The course aims to analyse the history of the italian opera from the XVII century to our day from the point of view of music and drama, and of social, economic and material aspects.
The intention is to encourage the student to analyse critically his musical experience examinating the complicated history of the complicated relationship between different ‘languages’, like poetry, music, imagery, gesture.
The critical awareness developed during the course is applied to tasks dedicated to the analysis of audiovisual products of opera, with particular reference to italian, french and german traditions.

Course unit content

The course analyses the following aspects of music theatre from the seventeenth-century to our day:
- Musica and drama in the opera
- Economy and society: production and representation
- Locations: theatres and concert halls, open air venues, virtual venues
- Technology: instruments, set construction, reproducers and diffusers
- Communication: shows, word of mouth and printed word, reproduction, mass-media
- Protagonists: composers, interpretors, players, managers, government, communicators, audience
– Analysis in detail of the history of Parma and its theatres

Oral lesson and exercises devoted to listening, seminars

Assessment methods and criteria

Oral exam. The particular criteria for evaluation include:
— Knowledge and critical awareness in relationship to current practices and their underlying historical roots
— The capacity to examine and discuss specific themes, and the appropriate exposition of the relative results
— The acquisition of an informed methodology of analysis of the different historical sources
— The capacity to connect the music on the stage with other artistic disciplines, such as literary and figuratives arts.
