HEMODIALYSIS AND PERITONEAL DIALYSIS
LEARNING OUTCOMES OF THE COURSE UNIT
The Course is aimed at giving the student the main concepts about renal failure (acute and chronic), with special regard to renal replacement therapy by hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis
PREREQUISITES
renal anatomy and physiology
COURSE CONTENTS SUMMARY
The basic issues about renal function will be illustrated, along with the main concepts on calculated, measured and estimated glomerular fintration rate. Then, the following topics will be covered: diagnosis, pathogenesis and classification of chronic kidney disease, acute kidney injury, hyperkalemia, central venous catheters for dialysis, arterovenous fistula, general principles of dialysis, hemddialysis, peritoneal dialysis, emergency dialysis, indications to dialysis start in patients with end-stage renal disease
