Integrated course unit module: SPEECH-LANGUAGE REHABILITATION

Learning objectives

The Course of Otolaryngology IV is part of the Integrated Course of Hearing VI and aims to enable the student to know and understand the essential elements of the major neoplastic diseases of the cerebellopontine angle, in particular the acoustic neuroma and neurofibromatosis 2. The ability to use the knowledge and understanding should enable the student to orientate speech therapy in the management of the patient with the Auditory brainstem implant.

Course unit content

The course aims to address the fundamental aspects of instrumental audiological diagnosis and possible prosthetic rehabilitation in neoplastic disease of the cerebellopontine angle.
The topics of the lectures are therefore mainly directed to the study of acoustic neuroma and neurofibromatosis 2, as well as notes on the other neoplastic diseases of the cerebellopontine angle. In particular, they face the aspects of epidemiology, symptomatology, diagnostic audiometry, surgical therapy. The second part of the course is devoted to the discussion of the Auditory brainstem implant, describing the characteristics of functionality, indications, intra-and postoperative electrophysiology.

Teaching methods

Oral lesson. The course program is carried out by means of the slide show and short films, in order to achieve greater student participation. The last few minutes of the lesson is devoted to the discussion, in order to clarify and supplement the subject matter.

Assessment methods and criteria

Oral exam. In the verification phase, the student must demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the fundamentals of major neoplastic diseases of the cerebellopontine angle. They must also demonstrate that they have mastered the basic elements that characterize the system Auditory brainstem from the point of view of rehabilitation speech therapy.
