Knowledge of the physiological bases of animal behavior

Course unit content

Functional organization of the nervous system.
Regulation of emotional and behavioral patterns by the hypothalamus and the lymbic system. Biological rhythms. Motivation and learning. Classic conditioning. Trial and error learning: reward and punishment. Social behavior and hierarchy. Territorial behavior and marking. Pheromones. Stress and distress in domestic animals. Fight or flight reaction. Welfare in farm animals.

Teaching methods

Lectures to make tha student able to understand the neurophysiological bases of animal behavior. Develop the skills of critical analysis aimed at resolving problems related to the future profession. Training objectives of the practical part: reinforce the principles discussed during the lessons and experience of acquisition and interpretation of physiological and behavioural parameters.
