Infectious Diseases Diagnostics for Biotechnologies
Learning outcomes of the course unit
The course is aimed to provide the student the basics elements and interpretation of the diagnostic methods in the fields of the major infectious diseases of humans and animals. Student will acquire the skills to approach the clinical cases with the most suitable metodologies.
Course contents summary
Aetiology and pathogenesis of the major infectious diseases of humans and animals
Criteria for a correct sampling
Direct diagnosis of bacterial, viral and fungal diseases: identification, isolation and characterization of microorganism.
Antibiotic resistance and characterization of Antibiotic-Resistant bacteria (Multi-drug resistant, Extensively –drug resistant, Pan-drug resistant).
Indirect diagnosis of bacterial, viral and fungal diseases through different methods (ELISA, SN, IFI)
Set up, interpretation and validation (sensitivity, specificity) of serological test used to support population screening;
Methodology for assessing the immune response in the course of infectious diseases and vaccination protocols.

Assessment methods and criteria
Oral examination. The interview aims to test the subject’s knowledge and its practical applications as well as the candidate’s communicative skills and learning ability.
