Integrated course unit module: 3ST YEAR GUIDANCE

Learning objectives

The following are the individual activities and each one identifies the level of competence and independence that the student must achieve.
The training topics are to lead to able to do, or taking part in doing for complex subjects, the student in "Pre-professional training" and are fundamental for the lifelong learning in veterinary practice, the so called "Day-one skills".
The objectives respond to the descriptor D5 (Lifelong learning) of the Dublin Descriptors.

D5- LIFELONG LEARNING

The following are the individual activities and for each the level of independence that the student must reach is identified.

Prerequisites

Attendance to the teachings in Food Science and Meat Hygiene

Course unit content

The topics are indicated in the personal booklet "Portfolio" of the student that collects the skills to be acquired during the period of "Pre-professional internship".
The individual skills are shown below and identified with a number.

Portfolio numbers:
PATHOLOGICAL ANATOMY I AND II AND NECROPSY TECHNIQUES
27. Necropsy examination – at least 5 animals - and compilation of necropsy protocol
28. Pathological exam of organs, sampling techniques, conservation and shipment of histopathological samples to the laboratory
29. Preparation of cytopathological and histopathological smears, stain techniques and interpretation.

FOOD SCIENCE AND MEAT HYGIENE
30. Salmonella spp, Listeria monocytogenes, Staphylococcus aureus, Campylobacter spp isolation
31. Bacteriological count
32. Enterobacteriaceae and Escherichia coli count
33. Working out an Hazards Analysis, Critical Control Point plan

DIAGNOSTIC IMAGING
35. Knowledge and use of the personal protective equipment – lead gloves, lead apron, lead thyroid shield, lead glasses
36. Positioning the animal for x-ray examination and use of the positioning devices - foam wedges, sand bags, strings, tape, ecc
37. Technique chart interpretation – set up of exposure values
38. X-ray beam collimation on the region of interest and selection of the correct x-ray cassette
39. Evaluation of film quality and film reading session
40. Recognising contrast medium – Barium Sulfate, non ionic water soluble iodate contrast medium
41. Preparation of the area of interest of ultrasound investigation with a clipper and cleaning with warm water, surgical soap. Apply ultrasound gel
42. Set up of ultrasound machine and insert the patient ID

Students with a diagnosis of specific learning disorders (DSA), certified according to law n ° 170/2010, are allowed more time available to demonstrate the acquisition of the skill expected in the Portfolio.
