Learning objectives

D1 - Knowledge and understanding
The student must demonstrate knowledge of the organization, tasks and functions of the National Health System as well as current national and European Community legislation on infectious animal diseases.

D2 - Applying knowledge and understanding
At the end of the training activity, the student must demonstrate to be able to discuss a case of infectious animal disease, referring to the national and Community reference legislation. The student will also have to identify the competences of the organizations within the SSN, region and municipality.
D3 - Making judgements
The student must be able to interpret the regulations concerning infectious diseases of animals and to identify the relevant operational figures of the SSN.

D4 - Communication
At the end of the training activity, the student must demonstrate to be able to express himself with good lexicon properties in relation to the current normative issues of infectious animal diseases.

D5 - Lifelong learning skills
At the end of the training activity, the student must be able to find and learn autonomously the national and Community legislation on animal infectious diseases and to propose prevention and control measures based on veterinary police regulations.

Course unit content

The aim of the course is to enable the student to know and understand the basics of the Veterinary Police Regulations and the current regulatory aspects of national and European Community legislation on the surveillance and management of outbreaks of infectious animal diseases.

In particular, the following aspects will be addressed:
Veterinary Public Health: Organization and functions of SSN. Executive bodies of SSN, UVAC and PIF, Consiglio superiore di Sanità, , ISS, Istituti Zooprofilattici Sperimentali , NAS, Carabinieri delle Politiche Agricole.

Functions of the regions in the veterinary public health. Municipal Competences in Public Health. Veterinary Services, ASL, Veterinary Service Areas. PMP and ARPA.
Veterinary Police Regulations. Art. 1-16, and subsequent integrations. Epidemic Emergency Management. Models. OIE. EU Community Regulations 2016/429. CITES.

Teaching methods

Oral lessons and seminars.

Assessment methods and criteria

Examination of the expected learning outcomes will be carried out finally in a single examination together with the module of Infectious Diseases I. The exam will be carried out by oral examination. The student must answer 3 questions, addressing the aspects:

1 question related to: organization and tasks of the National Health System
1 question related to: Veterinary Police Regulations
1 question related to: Veterinary Public Health, Informative Systems, International and EU Organizations of Public and Veterinary Health, Surveillance and management of outbreaks of infectious animal diseases.

The aim is to ascertain if the student has a good knowledge of the topics of the course, has good communication skills and is able to use it autonomously.
The result is assigned to the overall assessment of the answers from the student. The final mark is expressed in thirtieths.
Students with specific learning disability, certified according to the law n. 170/2010 will be granted the benefits provided by law.
