Learning objectives

The course aims to examine the most important aspects of the history of musical theatre from the seventeenth century to the present day. The point of view is that of communication processes related to both the linguistic and performative nature of musical and theatrical expression, both informational and promotional strategies.
The course has a dual purpose:
- Critically analyze the musical and theatrical experience of the student going back along the complex evolution of the relationship between different languages, such as poetry, music, image, movement;
- Reflect on the ways and means of communication that the industry employs music and theatre for the purpose of promotion and marketing.
The critical sense developed during the course will be further refined in the course of exercises devoted to listening and viewing examples of various kinds of musical theatre, with particular reference to the tradition of Italian, French and German.

Course unit content

The course examines the evolution of musical theatre in Italy from the seventeenth to the twentieth century from the perspective of the communication strategy.
This strategy is carried out on three levels:
- Linguistic and dramaturgical
- Social
- Information and promotional
In particular, the following aspects are investigated:
- Musica and drama in the opera
- Performance a) the ritual and the feast (actors/spectators), b) the show (actors/spectators)
- Economy and society: production and representation
- Locations: theatres and concert halls, open air venues, virtual venues
- Technological reproduction a) the text (manuscript, printed, electronic), b) performance (recorded and televised)
- The information a) promotion and dissemination; b) commentary and criticism (magazines, radio and television, internet, etc.)

Oral lessons, seminars, exercises devoted to listening.

Assessment methods and criteria

Oral exam. The particular criteria for evaluation include:
- Awareness and critical thinking in relation to the current daily reality and the historical roots that are the foundation of this reality
- The ability to rationalize on specific issues and the correct exposure of the results
- The ability to correctly insert the musical-theatrical experience in its historical context
- The ability to relate the musical experience in the theatre with other art forms such as literature and the arts
- The ability to relate the musical experience in the theatre with other forms of entertainment such as television and cinema
- The acquisition of a methodological awareness through the analysis of different sources for research
