Integrated course unit module: ITALIAN PHILOLOGY AND ROMANZA

Learning objectives

Learning oucomes of the course unit is to make every student capable of studying an old-french text. At the end of the course students wll be able to:
- read and translate by himself any given old french text of medium level;
- be able to read easy texts in manuscripts.
- be able to analyze from a philological point of viewl through the variants
- to be able to create comparisons and links between texts and soutces from different languages, particularly among galloromance and italian medieval Literatures.
- a philological analysis of a text from its variants
- a comparative analysis of sources different in nature and language, particularly among the romance literatures

Prerequisites

None.

Course unit content

The course will analyze the Chanson d'Aspremont, a XII-XIII c. chanson de geste widespread in Europe. Given the specialized level, besides translation and linguistic analysis special attention will be paid to manuscript tradition and critical edition of the text.

Teaching methods

Frontal and Seminar lessons. Students will be asked to read, translate and analyze the texts together with the teacher.
The lessons will be accompanied by training exercises on mss. tradition and reading from mss.

Assessment methods and criteria

The exam is divided into 2 parts which concur to the final mark:
-Short paper to be given at least one week before the exam (up to 5/30).
- oral part: translation of a short (and new) text (dictionary allowed), up to 10/30;
- oral examination about the course (up to 15/30).

Other information

Given the difficulty of the matter, is higly recommended to attend the course. Non-attendng students are requested to have an interview with the teacher.
Those who never passed a Philology Romance exam in the first cycle are invited to contact the teacher.
