Learning outcomes of the course unit
The course aims to give students a good knowledge of linguistic, rhetoric and ‘topical’ patterns of Italian literary tradition. Cause the course is addressed to foreign languages students , the study of Italian literature will be done under a theoretic and comparative point of view: will be given elements of narratology; textual criticism and metric.

1.student has to read and know: Dante, Inferno: canto 1; 2; 3; 5; 6; 10; 13; 15; 18; 26; 27; 31; 33; 34.
2. He has to know (movements; greatest and less famous writers) two periods of italian literature history. Student can choose among six periods (see infra), he'll choose a period of area A and a periodo of area B.
From beginnings to Humanistic age (capp. 1-6)
Humanistic age and Renaissance (capp. 6-12)
From Conuterreform to Arcadia (capp. 11-17)
XVIII century: from Arcadia to the beginnings of Romanticism (capp. 14-22)
From Romanticism to Decadentism (capp. 19-28)
From Decadentismo to the years after II world war (capp. 25-33)

Frontal lessons. They will have, as possible, the character of a textual workshop.
Assessment methods and criteria
Examination a written text, whose aims are: 1) to be a useful exercise of writing; 2) to check the ability (= proceeding by topics) in order to build a text on historical and literary subject; 3) to check student’s grammatical and lexical competences 4) to check the ability to ‘tranlate’ an ancient or rhetoric text in modern or more simple text (‘parafrasi’) 5) to check the knowledge of basics of literary competences (metrics; philology; narratology; rhetoric).
So, the written propedeutic examination requires:
- Paraphrasis of a poetica text (From Dnte’s Inferno)
- short questions about ecdotic; literary theory; rhetoric; metrics
- A short paper (50 lines max.) about a literary or historical subject.
