SOCIOLOGY OF ART
Learning outcomes of the course unit
- Main objective of the Course is the development of a study path that will enhance the student’s critical attitude and ability to correlate, structure and compare purely aesthetic and artistic phenomena with other cultural aspects. To reach this objective the acquisition of sociological competences will be crucial, to describe and interpretate the relationship between art, culture and society in different epistemological perpectives.
- Knowledge of the main sociological theories corresponding to socio-cultural system, in order to analyze their theoretical and conceptual frames
. - Knowledge and ability to interpretate the transformation in art system in the wider frame of general social changing.
- Acquire descriptive and analytical competences on the core role of artistic and cultural processes in Western society, with the aid of the main theories and empirical researches.
Course contents summary
Sociology of Art
The first module of the Course will have a general character. Following the thread of the relationship between art and society, with an eye on the nature and history od art, the Course will comply with fundamentals of traditional sociological analysis, i.e. the assumption that repetition of events analyzed is the key and non-negotiabile feature of the scientific framework (theory and methodology).
- The next module of the Course will be aimed at understanding artistic and cultural processes in their different facets, as the interpretation of the artistic facts through aestetic paradigms, production, criticism and relationship between public and market.
The course aims at examinating different critical problems of Sociology of Art, investigating the artistic production phenomenon in a equidistant perspective from the “absolute autonomy of art”point of wiew and from the “eteronomy of art as social product” perspective. Aesthetically relevant phenomena, and not autonomy of art in itself (and not for sure the nature of beauty), are the object of sociological analysis. So, the claim that the future of art sociology coincides with its separation from aesthetic reflection is a false answer to a false problem. It will be made clear that Sociology of Art is a chiefly multidisciplinar subject, and it is not possible to “circumscribe” and “compress” it in a single paradigm.

- The main teaching method will be frontal lesson. During the Course multimedia and interactive resources will be used to integrate contents and promote an active dialogue with students.
Assessment methods and criteria
- Final assessment will consist in oral examination on lesson’s contents and specific literature made available to the student.
- Ability to establish relationship between strictly cultural facets of art system will be assessed. This ability is the main focus both of frontal lessons and bibliography.
- Examination will be based on open questions. They will not be limited to content assessment, but will be formulated in order to understand if the candidate is able to establish relationships between the various theoretical and methodological frameworks, according to lessons content and reference bibliography.
- The assessment criteria are three:
1. Knowledge of the main topics of the lessons articulated in thematic paths, and of the reference bibiography.
2. Ability to understand theoretical and methodological problems.
3. Ability to establish relationships between the different contents and aspects of the subject matter.
If the student complies with all of these three criteria, he will be evaluated with a 18/30 mark or more.
