Integrated course unit module: RESEARCH METHODS AND EBN

Learning objectives

The Research Methodology course is part of the Integrated Course on Research Methodology and EBN.
The course aims to enable the student to know and understand the essential elements of nursing research.
The specific objectives can be as follows:
Understand the phases of quantitative and qualitative nursing research
Provide knowledge that allows you to critically evaluate a research problem
Provide knowledge on the different types of research drawings used in the quanti-qualitative nursing research

Course unit content

Fundamentals of nursing practice based on efficacy tests.
EBN - Hierarchy of Scientific Evidence - EBP in Individual Nursing Practice and in an Organizational Context.
Read and review research articles.
Description of the main sections of a research article.
Tips for reading articles.
Critical reading of articles and related tools.
Ethical Principles in Research.
Relationship between Ethics and Research.
Protecting participants in the study.
Review the research evidence in the literature.
Purpose of reviewing literature.
Types of information to look for in a literature review.
Phases and strategies in developing a literature review: business flow.
Guidelines for critical evaluation of literature review.
Write and submit a review of the literature.
Quantitative research.
Preliminary research phases: definition of problem, purpose, questions and research hypotheses (independent and dependent variables)
Research designs: experimental, almost experimental and non-experimental design.
Probabilistic Sampling: Simple randomized, randomized stratified, clustered, clustered, systematic sampling
Non Probabilistic sampling: Convenience, Snowball, Network and Propositive sampling.
Data collection methodology: questionnaire - assessment scales.
Variable measurement levels: nominal, ordinal, interval and ratio.
Data Quality: Reliability, Validity, Sensitivity, and Specificity.
Guidelines for Critical Evaluation of the Quality of Data Collected.
Interpretation of quantitative results.
Qualitative research
Preliminary research phases: definition of problem, purpose, questions and expectations of research.
Drawings and approaches to qualitative research: phenomenological / hermeneutic, ethnographic, grounded theory and case studies
Sampling: Convenience, avalanche or snowball, proposition (deliberate or reasoned choice).
Data Collection Methodology: QualitativevSelf-Report (unstructured interviews, semi-structured interviews, focus-group interviews, diaries, photo-stimulus interviews)
Qualitative observation methods.

Assessment methods and criteria

The achievement of the objectives of the course involves a written examination. It will be verified if the student has achieved the knowledge and the understanding of the various contents. Specific case studies will be proposed and it will be verified if the student has achieved the goal of applying the acquired knowledge.
