SCIENTIFIC ENGLISH I (ATT)
Learning outcomes of the course unit
The objective of the course is to provide students with the knowledge of the terminology of medical-scientific English in order to be able to read and translate simple scientific texts, with special emphasis on the hospital environment. The course will allow midwives to acquire skills of comprehension and oral communication in the biomedical field. Such knowledge and skills can be applied for updating and professional improving.

The course introduces the basics of English grammar, midwifery terminology and its use in clinical practice.

In and Around the Hospital
Accidents and emergencies
Nutrition and obesity
In addition, the following topics are developed:
Triage and First Aid - Hospital Emergency Department
Describe the pain
“Nursing 1” by Tony Grice – OXFORD Ed.
Frontal lessons, in English, will be aided by presentations and discussions in the classroom with students. Comprehension exercises, doctor-patient dialogues will be extensively used.
Assessment methods and criteria
The final written test will deal with biomedical English, with special emphasis on anatomical terms and terminology of the hospital environment.
