Course unit content

The course aims to analyze the poetic genre after 1870. This date does not only affect the political sphere but also concerns the French literary history and it embodies a culture shock comparable to the French Revolution of 1789. However, the poetic genre enters already in crisis before the political upheaval and only serves to highlight a situation that oppose a conservative tendency to the avant-garde that will emerge in the last three decades of the century. Object of particular analysis will therefore be the transition from symbolism to the avant-garde, L'Esprit Nouveau, and Surrealism.
