Learning objectives

The teaching aims to analyze the main aspects of the ‘language’ and genres of Western music from the eighteenth to the twentieth century, with particular reference to the social implications and the relationship with other art forms.
The course aims to encourage the student to critically analyze his musical experience going back along the complex evolution of the relationship between music and the historical reality in which it is born.
The critical sense developed during the course finds application in the course of exercises devoted to analytic listening examples from the most significant compositions of Italian, French, German, Russian, American traditions.

The course analyzes the following aspects of musical life in Western culture from the eighteenth to the twentieth century:
- Economy and society: production and representativeness
- Places: theaters and halls, outdoor venues, virtual places
- Technology: instruments and tools, stagecraft, players and speakers
- Communication: shows, oral disclosure and printing, reproduction, mass-media
- Characters: writers, actors, filmmakers, managers, leaders, communicators, public
- Language: genres and forms

Teaching methods

Oral lesson and exercises devoted to listening

Assessment methods and criteria

The exam consists of a written test and an oral test.
The written exam consists of 20 questions written on topics and fundamentals of the history of Western music of the eighteenth, nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
At the oral examination is accessed by passing the written (minimum: 15 correct answers).
The written test is designed to assess the basic knowledge of the student on the main aspects of Western music of the last three centuries: movements, trends, styles, techniques, musicians and works.
The oral test – which requires the minimum level of knowledge assessed through the written test – aims to evaluate:
- Awareness and the critical sense of the student in relation to the current daily reality and the historical roots that are the foundation of this reality
- The ability to rationalize on specific issues and the correct exposure of the results
- The acquisition of a basic methodological awareness through the analysis of different sources for historical research
- The ability to relate the musical experience with other art forms such as literature and the arts
- The ability to correctly insert the musical events in their historical period, from the perspective of cultural, social, political, economic.
