Learning objectives

The course provides the student with the basic and advanced tools for the integrated stratigraphic analysis of sedimentary basin fills, aimed to reconstruct the geometries, genetic and physical relationships of sedimentary bodies related to the climatic and tectonic evolution. These are key applicative elements for subsurface resource exploration and are also important for palaeoclimatic and palaeoenvironmnetal recostructions aimed to the definition of global climate and environmental change scenarios.

Prerequisites

basic elements of stratigraphy and sedimentology

Course unit content

Basin analysis, factors controlling sedimentation at different physical and time scales, introduction to the exploration of subsurface geology

Full programme

- Reappraisal of basic stratigraphic concepts
- Origin and use of sedimentary cyclicity
- Astronomic cyclostratigraphy
- Magnetostratigraphy
- Physical and sequence-stratigraphy: theory and application to basin analysis
- Seismic stratigraphy: theory and interpretation of seismic profiles
- Stratigraphic schemes and diagrams
- Relationships between tectonic and sedimentation at different physical and time scales
- The climatic control on sedimentation
- Example of application to basin analysis: the evolution of the Eocene South Pyrenees basin, the Miocene-Pliocene Apennine foredeep basin
- Applications to subsurface water and hydrocarbon exploration
