The purpose is to present a based of the fundamental principles which govern the energy conversion systems operation. A review of the main fluid machines is presented.

Conventional and renewable energy sources. Thermodynamics of thermal power plants: steam plants, gas turbines and internal combustion engines. Combined power plant. Cogeneration.
Architecture, principles of operation and performance of fluid machines.
Renewable power plants.
An overview on the world’s energy requirement. Energy sources. Fundamental equations: continuity, energy conservation. Properties of the thermodynamics fluid. Properties of fuels. Thermodynamics of thermal power plants. Determination and maximization of thermal efficiency. Effect of irreversibility. Specific fuel consumption.
Gas turbines: ideal models, efficiency, maximisation of both efficiency and work per cycle.
Boiler: typology, efficiency. Internal combustion engines. Combined power plant. Combined heat and power plant. Nuclear energy. Pumps, compressors, fans and turbines.

The exam is passed if the exercise is correct and both the questions are sufficient.
