Learning objectives

The course aims to provide students with the essential bases of both innate and specific immune response. Such knowledge will help the student in the understanding of certain diseases in dentistry.

Nomenclature and components of the immune system. General characteristics of immune responses. Mechanisms of innate immunity and adaptive immunity

The immune response. The Major Histocompatibility Complex. Innate immunity: Phagocitosis; Complement activation. Specific Immunity: Cell-mediated Immunity. Antigen recognition and effector functions of T lymphocytes. Humoral Immunity. Immunoglobulin types. Antigen recognition and effector functions of immunoglobulins. The memory of immune system

Teaching methods

During the lectures will be explained, with the help of slides prepared by the teacher, the bases of immune response. The slides will be available for the students. The lectures will be open to wide-ranging discussion with the participation of the students.

Assessment methods and criteria

The degree of learning will be assessed at the end of the course through oral examination to establish the learning outcomes on the bases of the proposed objectives. In particular, the student will be able to know the essential bases of immune response and to understand the mechanisms that regulate this response. The student will be evaluated as idoneous.
