Course unit partition: SPECIALIST MEDICINE I

Learning objectives

Acquisition of knowledge and understanding of the main oncologic diseases and of diabetes mellitus, laboratory and instrumental investigations, therapeutic strategies and tools, and specific aspects of nursing in the various conditions. The course has also the objective to provide the students with basic judging on patient condition, with tools for a correct communication on oncology issues and on diabetes mellitus, and with the basis for further studies.

Course unit content

Classification and analysis of the major hematologic diseases. Classification and basic notions on epidemiology, etiopathogenesis, clinical manifestations and principles of therapy of diabetes mellitus.

Full programme

Blood: composition and functions; production and disposal of blood components; basic concepts on staminal cells and bone marrow transplantation. Anemia: classification; forms of anemia due to reduced production or increased peripheral consumption. Aplastic anemia, anemia secondary to B12 and folic acid deficit; anemia due to iron deficiency; thalassemia, autoimmune hemolytic anemia. Myelodysplasia. Chronic myeloproliferative diseases: chronic myeloid leukemia, polycythemia vera, idiopathic thrombocytopenia, idiopathic myelofibrosis. Lymphoproliferative diseases: Hodgkin and non-Hodgkin disease, chronic lymphatic leukemia. Acute lymphoid and non-lymphoid leukemia. Monoclonal gammopathies: MGUS, myeloma, Waldenstrom macroglobulinemia. Disturbances of hemostasis, thrombocytopenia, coagulation deficit. Diabetes mellitus.

Teaching methods

Lessons with slides and videos and discussion with students.

Assessment methods and criteria

Oral exam on the whole program in one single session with other sections of clinical medicine integrated course. The knowledge and understanding of the subjects included in the program, reasoning capacity on the problems of hematologic and diabetic patients, the acquisition of a correct terminology and the possible personal elaboration will be evaluated. Final score results from academic board consultation, based on the grading obtained in each course section.
