Learning objectives

The aim of the course is the acquisition of an elementary level of spoken and written Arabic. At the end of the course the student will
− possess a good knowledge of the phonology of Arabic.
− acquire basic reading and writing skills.
− Acquire basic grammar.
− produce simple texts in written Arabic
− translate simple and short texts.

Course unit content

Arabic Alphabets (vowels and consonants), the sound system and pronunciation, the writing system (ways of writing each letter), words formation, dictation, and transcription.
Exercises on reading and writing skills
Basic conversation skills: vocabularies, expressions, etc
Introduction to grammar (basic information): nominal sentence and verbal sentences, personal pronouns, demonstratives, interrogatives, propositions, basic forms of adjectives (fem. masc), basic forms of adverbs (of time and place), the possessive, tenses (present, past, future).
Basic translations of sentences from Arabic into Italian and vice versa.

Teaching methods

Class lectures and practical exercises. There is also an assistant who helps students develop their reading and writing skills using technological devices.

Assessment methods and criteria

Assessment of the course is by final written and oral exams:
- Written
Transcription of texts
Reading and writing comprehension: filling spaces; reading a simple text and answering questions.
Basic translation from Italian into Arabic
Basic translation from Arabic into Italian.
Different questions to assess grammar
- Oral
The student must be able to read well any text in Arabic, pronounce well, respond to simple questions, and translate simple texts.
